How to Use Grab for Transportation in Thailand: A Tourist Guide (2026)

If you normally use Uber when travelling, you may notice something when you arrive in Thailand: there is no Uber here.

Don't worry. Thailand has Grab, and for many travellers it is one of the easiest ways to get around Bangkok and other parts of Thailand.

You can choose where you want to go, compare different vehicles, see the price before booking and follow your journey on the map. This can be very useful if you do not speak Thai or simply do not want to worry about explaining your destination.

No Uber in Thailand? Use Grab Instead

If you normally open Uber when travelling abroad, Grab will probably feel familiar.

Grab lets you book transport using your phone. Instead of standing beside the road and trying to explain where you want to go, you can enter your destination directly into the app.

For international visitors, this can make travelling much easier. Your pickup point and destination are already shown on a map, and you can compare the transport options before confirming your ride.

Happily Thailand Tip: Grab is not always the cheapest way to travel in Bangkok. The BTS, MRT, Airport Rail Link and metered taxis can also be good options. Grab is especially useful when you want convenience, clear directions and everything arranged through your phone.

Step 1: Open Grab and Choose Transport

When you open Grab in Thailand, you will see many services. Grab is much more than a taxi app.

Depending on your location and account, you may see Transport, Food, Mart, Express, Dine Out, Ride Later and other services.

For this guide, choose Transport.

We will cover GrabFood and GrabMart in separate Happily Thailand guides because there is already a lot to explore just inside Grab's transportation service.

Step 2: Choose Where You Want to Go

After choosing Transport, enter your destination.

You can normally search using the English name of a hotel, shopping centre, attraction, restaurant or other place.

For this example, we searched for Siam Paragon in central Bangkok.

Searching for Siam Paragon destination inside Grab Thailand
Large destinations such as Siam Paragon may have several Grab pickup or drop-off locations.

One useful thing about Grab is that large destinations may have several specific locations inside the app.

For example, Siam Paragon may show options such as Gate 1 or another entrance marked as a Grab Pick-up & Drop-off point.

This is important because Bangkok's shopping centres can be very large. Choosing the right entrance can save you from walking around the entire building later.

Step 3: Check Your Pickup Point Carefully

Choosing your destination is only half of the booking. Grab also needs to know exactly where the driver should pick you up.

This is especially important at large shopping centres, hotels, hospitals, office buildings and tourist attractions.

Grab may recommend a specific pickup point. In this example, the app suggests an exit at EmQuartier.

In our example at EmQuartier, Grab suggested a recommended pickup location.

Check the map before pressing Choose this pickup.

Your phone's GPS may show that you are at the correct building, but your driver may still be waiting at another entrance.

Useful tip: If Grab allows you to add pickup details, write something simple such as "Main entrance", "Gate 2", "Hotel lobby" or another clear landmark.

Step 4: Explore the Different Grab Transport Options

This is one part of Grab that first-time users may not expect.

You do not always have only one type of car.

Depending on your location, the time of day and available drivers, Grab may show motorcycles, standard cars, taxis, premium vehicles and several specialised transport choices.

Grab Thailand showing Standard Bike Standard Car Premium Car and Saver Car options
Grab Thailand showing Metered Taxi Executive Car Wheelchair Friendly and Pet Friendly ride options
FAST FOR ONE PERSON

Standard Bike

A motorcycle can be useful for one person travelling a short distance, especially when Bangkok traffic is heavy.

It is not a good choice if you have large luggage or do not feel comfortable travelling by motorcycle.

GOOD FOR MOST TOURISTS

Standard Car

Standard Car is one of the easiest choices for normal journeys around Bangkok.

In our screenshot, Grab describes the service as a car or taxi.

LOWER PRICE

Saver Car

Saver Car may offer a cheaper price when available.

If you are not in a hurry, compare Saver Car with Standard Car before booking.

MORE COMFORT

Premium Car

Premium Car costs more but may be useful when you prefer a more comfortable vehicle or are travelling for business.

THAI TAXI

Metered Taxi

Grab may also allow you to book a normal Thai metered taxi through the app.

Always check how the fare for the selected service will be calculated before confirming.

SPECIAL OPTION

Executive Car

Executive vehicles may be available for travellers who want more space or a higher-end journey.

These services can cost much more than a normal Grab ride.

ACCESSIBILITY

Wheelchair-Friendly

You may see accessibility-focused vehicle options depending on where you are travelling.

Availability can vary by location and time.

TRAVELLING WITH PETS

Pet-Friendly

If you are travelling with an animal, look for a pet-friendly vehicle instead of assuming that every standard driver can accept pets.

There Are Even More Grab Options

Grab may show services that you did not expect.

In our Bangkok search, one option was called Drive Your Car. This is a different type of service where a driver drives your own vehicle.

Most international tourists will probably never need this option, but it shows how many different transport choices can appear inside Grab.

Remember: Your Grab screen may not look exactly like ours. Vehicle choices, waiting times, promotions and prices can change depending on your location, time and driver availability.

How Much Does Grab Cost in Thailand?

There is no fixed Grab price for travelling around Bangkok.

The price depends on your route, demand, vehicle choice, time and other conditions.

In our example between EmQuartier and Siam Paragon, these prices were displayed when we checked the app:

Grab Option Example Price Best For
Standard Bike ฿42 One person, short journey
Saver Car ฿60 Budget-friendly car option
Standard Car ฿75 Normal everyday journey
Premium Car ฿129 More comfortable journey

Important: These prices are only examples from the time we checked. They are not fixed Grab fares. Your price may be higher or lower when you visit Thailand.

Grab or a Normal Taxi in Thailand?

Traditional taxis are still a normal part of travelling around Thailand, and a metered taxi may sometimes be cheaper than Grab.

For first-time visitors, however, Grab can make the process easier.

Your pickup point and destination are already inside the app. You can check your vehicle, see the journey on the map and understand more about your booking before entering the car.

This can reduce misunderstandings about your destination and make travelling easier when you do not speak Thai.

Grab is therefore not necessarily about finding the cheapest possible ride. For many tourists, the biggest advantage is convenience and clarity.

Is Grab Safe to Use in Thailand?

Grab displays information about your driver and vehicle inside the app and allows you to follow your journey using GPS.

You should still use normal travel precautions.

Before entering the vehicle, check that the licence plate and vehicle information match what you see inside Grab.

Do not get into a vehicle simply because somebody tells you that they are your Grab driver.

Can Foreign Tourists Pay by Card?

Grab supports cashless payment options, including linked debit and credit cards.

This can be useful when travelling because you do not always need to prepare the correct amount of Thai baht.

Check the payment method shown at the bottom of the booking screen before confirming your ride.

Depending on your card provider or account, additional payment or foreign transaction fees may apply.

What About Bangkok Toll Roads?

Bangkok has expressways and toll roads.

A toll may be an additional cost on top of the price originally displayed for some journeys.

If your final fare is slightly different, check whether the journey used a toll road or included another applicable surcharge.

GrabBike or GrabCar in Bangkok?

Bangkok traffic can become very heavy, especially during busy periods.

A motorcycle may sometimes move through traffic more easily than a car, making GrabBike useful for short journeys.

However, choose the option that is right for you.

If you are travelling with luggage, shopping bags, children or another passenger, a car will usually be more practical.

If you do not feel comfortable travelling by motorcycle, do not choose one simply because it is cheaper.

Do You Need to Speak Thai?

No, and this is one reason Grab can be useful for international visitors.

Because your destination is entered into the app, you do not need to explain the entire journey in Thai.

Your driver may still need to contact you if the pickup location is difficult to find.

This is why choosing the correct pickup point is one of the most important parts of booking Grab.

Our Most Important Grab Tip

Check the map, not only the name. Bangkok has huge shopping centres, hotels, stations and office buildings. Selecting the correct building does not always mean you selected the correct entrance.

Look at the recommended pickup location and check which entrance is closest to you.

Spending an extra 30 seconds checking your pickup point can save several minutes of trying to find your driver.

Can You Schedule a Grab in Advance?

You may notice a Ride Later option inside the Grab app.

This can be useful when you already know when you need to leave, especially for an airport journey.

Availability can depend on the service, location and time, so check the options shown inside your Grab app.

Can You Use Grab for Bangkok Airports?

Grab can also be useful when travelling to or from airports in Thailand.

Airport pickups can work differently from a normal hotel or shopping centre pickup because airports may have specific areas for ride-hailing services.

Always follow the instructions shown in Grab and look for official airport pickup signs.

If you are arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport, remember that Grab is not your only choice. Bangkok's Airport Rail Link is another convenient option for travelling into the city.

Should Tourists Use Grab in Thailand?

For many visitors, Grab is one of the easiest ways to travel around Thailand.

You can search for your destination in English, check your pickup point on a map, compare several vehicle choices and see the price before booking.

Grab will not always be the cheapest or fastest option. Bangkok also has the BTS Skytrain, MRT, Airport Rail Link, buses, boats and traditional taxis.
